Project Title: Malaria Molecular Surveillance in Tanzania (phase 2)

Project Description: Short description of the Project/Consultancy/Platform: This is the second phases of the project on molecular surveillance of malaria (MSMT) which was initiated in Tanzania in May 2020. The first phase (MSMT1) was undertaken with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (from May 2020 to April 202) to build the comprehensive capacity for malaria molecular surveillance (MMS) to support policy and decision making for malaria control/elimination. Short description of the Project/Consultancy/Platform: This is the second phases of the project on molecular surveillance of malaria (MSMT) which was initiated in Tanzania in May 2020. The first phase (MSMT1) was undertaken with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (from May 2020 to April 202) to build the comprehensive capacity for malaria molecular surveillance (MMS) to support policy and decision making for malaria control/elimination. This second phase (MSMT2) is a continuation of MSMT1, funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to further scale-up, strengthen and sustain MMS in Tanzania. The goal of the project is to conduct MMS in Tanzania to inform National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) and policy makers. The objectives of the projects are ➢ To conduct antimalarial resistance and histidine rich protein 2/3 (hrp2/3) gene deletions surveillance on a national scale to inform NMCP decision making ➢ To build serological capacity for detection of antigens used in rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) and vector genomic surveillance (secondary objectives) ➢ To conduct antimalarial resistance modelling in collaboration with colleagues at Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) and the Institute for Disease Modelling (IDM). ➢ To deliver training and capacity building to NPHL to ensure sustainability of MMS The current project will involve sample collection in all 26 regions of Mainland Tanzania. The MSMT2 project will utilize mixed designs within the platforms initiated by MSMT1 and currently running in Mainland Tanzania. The MSMT1 established a network of HFs and communities as platforms for conducting cross-sectional HF and community surveys, and longitudinal HF surveys, and these will be utilized in MSMT2. MSMT2 project will also undertake other activities to accomplish the above objectives, including effective engagement with NMCP, NPHL and other stakeholders, as well as training of local experts for effective implementation of the project, and sustainability of iMMS in Tanzania. The MSMT2 will also utilize human resources, field sites, laboratory and data analysis infrastructure set-up by MSMT1
